Traditional meatballs and sauce, served up sub shop style.
2 lbs ground round
1 cup panko bread crumbs
1 clove garlic, finely minced
1/4 cup finely chopped onion (optional)
1 jar (16 oz) spaghetti sauce
6 Italian sub rolls
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Set oven to broil setting and allow to heat up for 15 minutes. Combine ground round, bread crumbs, egg, garlic and onion in a large bowl. Roll into 2-inch balls. Place on baking pan in oven. Broil meatballs for 20 to 25 minutes (until meatballs reach an internal temperature of 160° F on a meat thermometer). Place half of spaghetti sauce in a medium saucepan over low heat. Add broiled meatballs to the sauce. Heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Slice rolls. Place six meatballs, a generous sprinkling of cheese and a spoonful of remaining sauce on each roll and return to broiling oven for approximately 3 minutes (watch to ensure rolls do not burn).
